How do I calculate my hourly rate from annual salary?

To figure or work out your hourly pay from an annual salary, divide your annual gross salary by the total number of hours you work in the year.

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

Example: $80,000 ÷ (38 × 52) = approximately $40.49 per hour before tax.

If you work a different number of ordinary hours, change the hours-per-week field. If your calculation excludes unpaid periods, change the weeks-per-year field too. This makes the result more useful than assuming every worker has the same schedule.

Why the calculator starts at 38 hours

Fair Work states that the National Employment Standards set a 38-hour weekly reference for full-time employees, with reasonable additional hours possible. Awards, enterprise agreements and individual arrangements can affect actual ordinary hours.

How to calculate your hourly rate from monthly salary

If you know your monthly gross salary rather than your annual salary, convert the monthly amount to a yearly amount first, then divide by your annual work hours.

Hourly rate = (Monthly salary × 12) ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

Example: $6,500/month × 12 = $78,000/year. At 38 hours × 52 weeks, $78,000 ÷ 1,976 ≈ $39.47/hour.

Quick pay-period formulas

  • Yearly → hourly: annual salary ÷ yearly work hours
  • Monthly → hourly: monthly salary × 12 ÷ yearly work hours
  • Weekly → hourly: weekly gross pay ÷ weekly hours
  • Hourly → yearly: hourly rate × weekly hours × weeks per year

Hourly wage to yearly salary formula

To calculate annual salary from an hourly rate, multiply the hourly wage by your weekly hours and the number of weeks you want included in the year.

Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks per year

Example: $40/hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $79,040 per year before tax.
