How do I calculate annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply the hourly wage by your weekly hours and the number of weeks included in the year. This is the standard way to convert hourly wage to yearly salary or pay per hour to salary.

Annual salary = Hourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks per year

For example, $40 per hour × 38 hours per week × 52 weeks gives an annual gross salary estimate of $79,040.

The same $40 hourly rate is about $1,520 per week, $3,040 per fortnight and $6,586.67 per month when annualised using those assumptions.

Hourly rate to salary: weekly, fortnightly and monthly

Once annual salary is known, the calculator estimates other gross pay periods too. Weekly pay is hourly rate × weekly hours. Fortnightly pay is weekly pay × 2. Monthly gross pay is annualised pay ÷ 12.

Annual wage calculator assumptions

Your annual salary calculation depends on the weekly hours and weeks per year you choose. A person working 38 hours for 52 weeks will have a different yearly estimate from someone working 30 hours for 48 weeks, even at the same hourly wage.

What this hourly wage estimator does not include

It does not calculate income tax, Medicare levy, superannuation, casual loading, overtime, penalty rates, allowances, leave loading or award-specific entitlements. Those items require additional employment and tax information.

Choosing the right weekly hours in Australia

Use the hours that apply to your own comparison. Fair Work notes a 38-hour weekly reference for full-time employees under the National Employment Standards, but actual ordinary hours can depend on an award, enterprise agreement or contract.
