How do I calculate my hourly rate?

To calculate your hourly rate from an annual salary, divide the annual gross salary by the total number of hours worked in the year. This is the same method people use when they want to figure hourly rate from annual salary or work out hourly pay from annual salary.

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

Using 38 hours per week and 52 weeks per year gives 1,976 annual work hours. An $80,000 annual salary therefore converts to approximately $40.49 per hour before tax.

Important: this is a gross mathematical pay conversion, not a determination of your legal base rate or entitlements. Paid leave, overtime, penalties, allowances, superannuation and contract terms can affect the practical comparison.

How to work out hourly pay from annual salary

  1. Enter or identify your annual gross salary.
  2. Choose your ordinary hours per week. The calculator starts at 38 hours, but you can change it.
  3. Choose weeks per year. Use 52 for a simple full-year comparison, or fewer if your scenario excludes unpaid periods.
  4. Divide annual salary by total annual hours. The calculator does this instantly and shows daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly equivalents too.

$150,000$75.91$2,884.62

How to calculate your hourly rate from monthly salary

If your pay is quoted monthly, annualise it first. Multiply the monthly gross salary by 12, then divide by your annual work hours.

Hourly rate = (Monthly salary × 12) ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

Example: $6,500 per month becomes $78,000 per year. At 38 hours per week and 52 weeks, that is approximately $39.47 per hour.

Calculate hourly rate in Australia: why 38 hours is a useful default

The National Employment Standards provide a maximum weekly hours reference of 38 hours for a full-time employee unless reasonable additional hours apply. Awards and enterprise agreements can specify or average ordinary hours differently, so use the weekly hours that match your own employment arrangement.

For official guidance, see the Fair Work Ombudsman maximum weekly hours fact sheet.

When to change weeks per year

For a simple annual salary comparison, 52 weeks is useful. If you are converting income earned only during part of the year, use the number of paid or worked weeks relevant to your scenario.

Salary package versus base salary

Before comparing offers, check whether the advertised figure is base salary or a total remuneration package. A package may include components that are not cash salary. This calculator intentionally does not guess those components.
